Moving the Needle With Hybrid IT

Adoption of hybrid IT architecture has changed how we think about enterprise computing and demands a radically different approach to managing complexities within on-premises and cloud infrastructures. Even though cloud offers greater scalability, performance and access to resources on demand, large organizations are still facing challenges in migrating enterprise applications to cloud.

As we are seeing more often, hybrid IT creates new challenges for IT Ops and DevOps when current processes are extremely siloed. Still, having some method to take on the challenges of integration and scalability facing today’s enterprises has merit. CIOs and IT leaders are aware of limitations posed by migrating business-critical workloads and want to ensure that their infrastructures are built with redundancies to minimize any unexpected downtime.

Evolving IT Infrastructure and Service Delivery

Gartner reports that in order to support business operations resilience, a growing number of organizations must now support aggressive IT service recovery times of less than four hours and IT service availability levels of 99.5 percent or better. Like in most cases, legacy IT infrastructures running applications with interdependencies among multiple hardware and software components makes it harder to move workloads from on premises to public or private cloud.

Times have never been more challenging for teams managing hybrid IT, especially when added complexities can impact process agility and service delivery. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. Software-defined IT operation can help reduce this risk, prevent outages, and guarantee service assurance while managing hybrid IT seamlessly.

Service Assurance for Hybrid IT Environments

Many IT monitoring solutions haven’t kept pace with the rapid evolution of modern IT infrastructures. Organizations still rely on disparate and siloed monitoring tools built on legacy frameworks that present a fragmented view of IT operations. One Gartner report states that, “I&O leaders are increasingly presented with integration challenges with ITIM solutions that are third-party-device-version-constrained, and ITIM deployments can be stalled or halted when dependent on vendor release schedules for specific device or software support, which vendors can downplay during the sales cycle.”

Moreover, managing separate monitoring tools for system components like server, network, storage, etc. has become a daunting task for IT Ops. Today’s distributed, multitier, multisite applications in hybrid IT environments need tools to monitor all parts of an IT service — regardless of where it is running or on what type of system — with capabilities to detect issues within an application or how it is interacting with other components.

Monitoring Hybrid IT

The tools that offer service assurance for hybrid IT must be able to move their way through application systems and prevent slowdowns or application failures. It is increasingly clear that tools developed to keep a single system or a small cluster running are no longer sufficient in today’s hybrid environments that can include physical, virtual and components found in a cloud service provider’s data center.

A new set of advanced hybrid IT monitoring tools will be able to monitor and manage all of the components of the IT infrastructure to achieve the goal of preventing service interruptions that have a negative impact on users. We realized that IT teams need a whole new slew of capabilities, and by unifying IT monitoring through Zenoss, organizations can decommission many of the monitoring silos that have built up over time in their environments.
