The IT Operations Manifesto: Grabbing the Torch from IBM Tivoli Netcool

We declare that IT Operations will no longer take a back seat to other disciplines within Cloud computing and will rise to accept the challenges of managing this new complex world.

It is time to say good-bye to legacy vendors with their non-existent and/or never ending development cycles, rising maintenance costs, and proprietary solutions that covet vendor lock-in.

No longer will we allow executive relationships with legacy vendors to drive far-reaching technology decisions that may be the difference between being a leader or a has-been in your respective markets.

Costly long-term investments in a myriad of different legacy Operations solutions, frameworks, or other tools that have failed to deliver real value in yesterday’s IT and struggle to cope with today’s Cloud paradigm must be replaced with open solutions that are both innovative and disruptive.

Zenoss aims to free IT Operations from IBM Tivoli Netcool by offering the most powerful, open, and scalable operations platform built for the Cloud era.

Founded in 1989, Micromuse was a disruptive force within the IT industry and was on the bleeding edge of delivering UNIX to corporate operations.  In 1992, Micromuse launched Complexity Management and became an even bigger disruption within the Network Management market.  In 1993, Micromuse launched their famed Netcool product solutions changing the world forever.  Finally, in 2005, IBM purchased Micromuse for $865 million in an all-cash transaction.

The world has changed immensely since both Micromuse’s founding and IBM’s acquisition of the company.  In any case, IBM Tivoli Netcool was designed for network management within the client-server era.  An era whereby static reigned supreme and dynamic or virtual environments were reserved for the UNIX systems of which Micromuse was founded.

Wherever you are on the journey to Cloud computing, the technology and challenges of this new paradigm is daunting.  Virtualization has expanded to nearly every layer of the IT infrastructure stack including compute, storage, and networking.  The legacy approach pioneered by Micromuse simply was not designed for this dynamic infrastructure and must yield to an open and innovative approach from Zenoss.

Our commercial open source heritage brings a new approach to transform IT Operations via a growing open source community, a robust commercial business, and a disruptive set of solutions.

Today, Zenoss grabs the torch from IBM Tivoli Netcool and will prove to you that there is an open alternative that is innovative, scalable, cost effective, built for dynamic infrastructures, and aims to transform IT Operations for the Cloud era.  #netFool
